Unlike most grays—like Payne's Grey or Neutral Tint—that typically rely on black pigments and sometimes phthalo blue, this color was designed by artist Jane Blundell to avoid the dulling effects of black and the staining tendencies of phthalo blue. Jane envisioned a liftable, granulating gray that could beautifully replicate the dramatic look of stormy skies and soft shadows.
Not only does Jane's Grey function as a neutral tint, darkening other colors without altering their essence, but it also helps maintain color harmony in your artwork. Many artists commonly mix ultramarine blue with burnt sienna, but Jane realized that a ready-made version of this exquisite combination would simplify the process of achieving rich, deep hues.
Initially, she crafted this color in her own pans and palettes for her students. The high demand led her to collaborate with DANIEL SMITH to make Jane's Grey accessible to artists everywhere. Now part of our Signature Series, Jane's Grey is semi-transparent, granulating, low-staining, and offers exceptional lightfastness, making it an essential addition to any artist's palette.
